What Is a D20 Used For?

The twenty-sided die is the most used die in Dungeons and Dragons and most other tabletop role-playing games. You roll it for attack rolls, saving throws, ability checks and death saves. Outside of RPGs, a D20 works as a random choice generator for 20 options, a tiebreaker, or a fair way to pick a starting player.

Reading Your D20 Result

The number on the die is the raw roll. In D&D you then add your modifier, which is why a result is often written as 1d20+5. A natural 20 is the highest possible roll and usually counts as a critical success. A natural 1 is a critical failure at most tables.

Advantage and Disadvantage

With advantage you roll two D20s and keep the higher result. With disadvantage you roll two and keep the lower one. Set the number of dice to 2 above and compare the two numbers. If you have both advantage and disadvantage they cancel out and you roll a single die.

D20 Roller FAQ

Is this D20 roller fair?

Yes. Every roll is produced by a random number generator that gives each face of the die an equal 1-in-20 chance. Each roll is independent, so previous results never affect the next one.

What does a natural 20 mean?

A natural 20 is the highest possible result on a D20 and usually counts as a critical success. In D&D it triggers a critical hit on attack rolls and is often treated as an automatic success on ability checks.

How do I roll with advantage?

Roll two D20s and keep the higher number. With disadvantage you roll two D20s and keep the lower one. You can set the dice count to 2 on this page and compare the two results.
